Things You Should Know Before Getting a Perm

Here are the common questions we usually ask about perming, provided with answers:

#Can getting a perm damage my hair?

Natural perm is the safest and permanent perms. Perm actually requires strong chemicals that will make your hair curl. Sometimes, you will also use special shampoos and conditioners for a post-perm homecare use.

#How often do I have to get a perm?

Perms usually last for about 2 to 6 months. Tighter perms often last longer and it relaxes over time. If you want to have your hair permed after the curls relaxed, you must tell your hair stylist. They know what to do about it since chemicals might still be on it.

#How long do I have to wait to shampoo my hair?

After having your hair permed, you can wait up to 48 hours before shampooing it. If you work out or sweat, use light conditioner or dry shampoo when you shower.

#Is there anything special I need to do before a perm?

Do not heavy scratch or brush your hair. The perm chemical might burn any form of scalp stimulation. You can also have a deep conditioning treatment the day before your appointment. You must also avoid hot water when you wash your hair.

#What should I do after my perm?

Do not shampoo your hair for 48 hours. You can also let your hair trimmed so the healthy and bouncy curls would come out. In order to maintain your perm, you have to have a touch-up o your root tips.

#How will a perm affect my hair color?

At times, your hair color will be pulled out when you get your hair permed. After a week, you can have a semi-permanent hair color since it utilizes the lower amount of hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide may damage your perm and might not have an effect on your hair color.

#What type of perm is great for me?

This actually depends on the look you want. You can choose from spiral perm, body perm, spot or plain curl perm, multi-textured perm, root perm, stacked perm, pin curl perm, loose wave perm, partial perm, and volumising perm.

6 Tips for Newly Body Permed Hair

  • Shampoo your hair 48 hours after perming. This will allow your hair to adjust to the chemicals used in the hair treatment. You must also use a shampoo exclusive for “chemically treated hair”.
  • Apply conditioner to your hair after shampooing. The conditioner will keep your newly permed hair softer as it will last longer. They also untangle your hair and close the cuticle.
  • Avoid blow drying your hair. However, you can use a diffuser on a cool setting. Do not comb your hair within 48 hours after your treatment. But you can use your hand instead and run a wide-toothed comb afterward.
  • Avoid tying your hair in a bun. Let it down for about one to two days. This will avoid deformation of the curls and maintains the shape.
  • In every 4 to 5 weeks, you must have your hair trimmed. This will maintain the healthiness and bring out the bounciness of your hair.
  • Avoid exposure to the sunlight. You must always cover your hair whenever you go out. The sun can damage your permed tresses. Use a swimming cap when you’re in the pool so you can avoid your hair from chlorine. You must also follow what your stylist says.

How to Wrap a Body Wave Perm

If you’re a mom and you don’t have enough time to go out, be aware that you can have a body wave perm at home. Though professional stylists do this, you can actually make your own body wave perm. In perming, you should remember that perm wrapping makes up the success of the hair perm.

Thus, you must be able to learn and achieve the proper way of wrapping your hair. You must know how the hair is attached to the perm rod, what the size of the rod should be, and how many rods you will need. In this body wave perm tutorial, you will need:

  • Hair clips
  • Perm rods
  • And papers
  • Tail combs
  • Spray bottle of water

Once everything is ready, you just have to follow these steps:

  • Shampoo the hair with a clarifying shampoo for two times, without conditioner or other hair products. Section the hair into 9 parts; sections should be shorter than the length of the rods.
  • Start curling the first section and slice a segment of hair as thick as the rod you have. Comb it out until smooth and fold an end paper over the segment about 1/3 away from the tip of your hair. Gently mist the end paper down past each segment’s end.
  • Wrap the sticking out end paper over the road and turn the rod under. You should wind the hair onto the rod evenly. Afterward, wind the hair tighter onto the rod and secure it once you reached the scalp.
  • Slice another segment below it and repeat the same process. You should wrap the hair down and toward the neck, toward the ear on each side, and toward the face. If your perm looks crowded, this means your segment is too thin. If you can insert your finger in between, your segment is too thick.

Choosing Body Wave Perm

Body wave perm is actually great for women who have thin or flat hair. Body wave perms usually help in making your hair look thick. If your hair is naturally straight, the curls must be larger. Body wave perm produces loose curls and a gentle wave. This will add up the volume of your hair and make it look healthier.

Body wave perm will also be great for shoulder length or longer hair, especially those with square-shaped faces. This will enable your facial features to look softer and give more life to your face. Before you decide which perm is suited for you, make sure to have some research about it. There are perms that are perfect for your features and the quality of your hair.
